The Borrowers,
with John Goodman, Jim Broadbent, Celia Imrie, and Mark Williams, is
based on the children's books by Mary Norton. Hugh plays the part of
the village constable, Officer Steady. The film was warmly received in
Britain last year (called "the must-see family film of the Christmas
season" by Sight and Sound) and also got very good
reviews in the U.S. Although his role is small, Hugh has shared in the
favorable comment: "excellent cameo comic turns from the likes of Hugh
Laurie and Ruby Wax" (Bristol Evening News); "a hilarious
turn by Hugh Laurie" (Dayton Daily News, Feb. 13, 1998);
"Hugh Laurie is simply superb as an interfering policeman"(Alan Little,
Evening Gazette On-Line); "Hugh Laurie's diffident
cop
gets some of the best lines when teamed with the blustering Goodman."(Variety,
Dec. 8-14, 1997)
John Goodman told the Irish News that the chance
to
work with Hugh was the "real joy" of making The Borrowers:
"The first time I was over here was seven years
ago, for a film called King Ralph with Peter O'Toole.
Around that time the first of the Jeeves and Wooster
series came on. I've always been a Wodehouse fan and Stephen Fry and
Hugh just knocked me out. I've been a fan ever since." (Irish News,
Dec. 6, 1997)
