TJ's Insight - 2006 Golden Globe Awards Showcases Best and Worst of Public Speaking
Laurie used his time to deliver performance art. He cleverly mocked award show pretensions by claiming to have put 173 names of people he needed to thank on separate pieces of paper in his pocket and that he was only going to pull out three and read them. He was different, unique, surprising, and devoid of clichés. He was having fun and he was funny. He knew it was his moment but he made it special for everyone else too. Laurie for Oscar host 2007? (Emphasis mine)

Winner of a Golden Globe for Lead Actor in a TV Drama Series!

Hugh gave a wonderful acceptance speech, witty and sincere, ending with thanks to his friend, Stephen Fry, his wife, Jo, (good shot of Jo in the audience, giving a big smile), and his kids. You can download a video clip in the Member Specials area of the Hugh Laurie FAQ Forum. Also available: a brief interview on E! after the show.

From the Chicago Tribune online:

Another welcome win came for Hugh Laurie, who won as best TV actor for the top-notch medical drama “House.” Laurie gave a typically Globe-ian speech, in that it was seemingly spontaneous, wonderfully performed and very entertaining.

“I made a list of all the people who deserve to be thanked,” he said in his very proper British accent. “It came to 172 names. Are you ready?” In the end, he read off three names at random, then eventually thanked the show’s writers, actors and his wife.

Observer Tidbit

Carole Cadwalladr's column summing up the good and bad from 2005 had this to say about House:

In: House. Is there not something strangely sexy about Hugh Laurie as a misanthropic American MD with a gravelly accent and a gammy leg? And this even though it is on Channel 5?

Goodbye to all that, London Observer, Jan. 1, 2006
