House Premiere ratings
•Nice guy finishes second. The season premiere of Fox's House featuring an uncharacteristically happy Dr. House (Hugh Laurie) was the show's best performance without American Idol as a lead-in. With 19.7 million viewers, it kept the NFL games from finishing one-two in the rankings and also was tops among young adults (9.5 million) out of all non-sports shows.

Fox Rides ‘House’ to a Win
Kicking off its third season, Fox’s medical drama “House” clobbered the competition on Tuesday night, with 19.41 million viewers, lifting the network to the top for the night over all. “House,” starring Hugh Laurie, made its debut an hour earlier than its regular 9 p.m. time slot, yet among adults 18 to 49, it increased its audience by 20 percent over last season’s premiere. A new series, “Standoff,” about a romance between two F.B.I. hostage negotiators, benefited from the “House” lead-in and handily bested its competitors, although it garnered an unimpressive 66 percent retention of adults 18 to 49. Despite the Fox onslaught, new episodes of two CBS reality shows fared relatively well: “Big Brother” drew 9 million and “Rock Star: Supernova” 7.63 million. NBC and ABC brought up the rear with repeats, though NBC won 10 p.m. with the fan favorite “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” (8.7 million). The newcomer MyNetworkTV also began its two telenovelas, “Desire” and “Fashion House,” which both attracted meager audiences. BENJAMIN TOFF

House S3 Review
Excerpt:
"House" fans: The brilliant physician is back and better than ever.
The Fox medical drama starts its third season Tuesday by giving star Hugh Laurie (left) new angles to play. His character, Dr. Gregory House, is recovering from gunshot wounds he suffered in last season's finale. His limp is gone, and he's jogging. He reveals surprising humanity toward a patient's wife, but a reckless impatience toward a paralyzed girl. Laurie plays the changed House as a dazzling mystery.
